Once again DMV basketball is in an uproar as two prominent WCAC coaches are fired right before the season starts. Add to that Jazz Persazic’s resignation from 2010 WCAC Champion Elizabeth Seton and you have a drama-filled scenario going into this season. Whether Rod Hairston from Bishop McNamara and Russell Davis from Holy Cross warranted being terminated is between them and the school’s athletic directors. As a community we should be concern about the players in these programs and their overall well-being as student athletes. At Bishop McNamara, the new coach Gary Lee has been a part of the basketball program, his daughter is on the team and he is a seasoned AAU veteran..so at least there is a level of familiarity. The Holy Cross situation is a little less easy to swallow because it was done with 2 weeks of the start of practice and the rumor was “leaked” weeks before it happened. My question is if the school administration was unhappy with Coach Davis why wait until this point in the semester to let him go? The only answer I can think of is that the school wanted to prevent a mass exodus of students and revenue…$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. But I am already hearing about some transfer plans in the works for some top HC players.
Holy Cross has the most overall talent in the WCAC and they will have a seasoned WCAC veteran at the helm in Ed Simpson(former St. John’s Coach) but it will take time for all involved to get adjusted to the new situation. This is going to be one of the most intriguing seasons in the WCAC at this point if I had to pick a front runner I would go with old faithful Good Counsel, decent talent, excellent coaching and most important minimal drama. My dark horse is Paul VI, because Scott Allen’s team always get better as the season progresses. And before you St. John’s fans start getting twisted it ain’t about the talent because it is there, it is about how it will be deployed.

holy cross will throw their coach under the bus….i followed them under coach keith brown's leadership.
the school was so unfair…imo…to coach brown, ( who is now an asst. @ georgetown), that his tenure at holy cross doesn't appear on his resume.
I too am concerned about the impact on the children. I also agree that Holy Cross waited to the last minute to fire the coach moreso for selfish/vengeful reasons–primarily to keep the great talent that Russell Davis and his staff worked so hard to recruit this year not to mention the current great talent. But we all need to keep in mind what impact this move has on the children. The sad thing is that the AHC staff reassured the parents, coaches, and students (just a few weeks before) that a coaching change would not be made this season after rumors started flying about a possible replacement coach and several parents were alarmed with the thought of losing Coach Davis given his above average track record over his past tenure at AHC. And yes, I agree that it is starting to look like this is par for the course at AHC.
As a result of this unfair move by AHC, I believe there should be some type of WCAC new rule in place that protects coaches from being fired so close to the start of the season (less than 2 weeks) –similar to (if I got it right) the August cut-off date that disables high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from transferring to other WCAC schools. Food for thought– but probably too controversial a rule for several reasons.
I am sure Coach Davis, if he chooses to do so, will be coaching a great team next year now that it is too late to find a new team. More importantly I am sure the girls for both teams, AHC and McNamara, will be just fine in the long run.
The firing of Russell Davis is pretty strange. I thought it was odd when I over heard an AAU coach say he would not mind getting coaching at AHC. I am saying to myself, “Why would he be saying this, Russ is the coach.”
I agree that it is all about the student-athletes and that is a must. I found out the reason, or an explanation for his firing. I can not say, however, it was for a strange reason that seemed really odd, especially when you consider the timing of his firing.
The AHC girl’s basketball team will do just fine. They have a coach with a very good track record and girls are starting to settle in. Of course, with change there will be some adjustments. However, despite having a bulls-eye on their backs, I would not count AHC out as being the odds on favor to win the WCAC.

Russell Davis is being given too much credit. This guy recruited athletes who had below average grades and created drama within the school because the players dated their teammates. AHC's administration gave Davis free reigns to run his program as he chose to so long as he kept winning. He was never held accountable for any of his actions within the athletic department or for the action of some of his players.
It was only a matter of time before the new AD and new President at AHC realized this released him from his overpaid position.
Like many students in the WCAC have above average grades and don't date each other? Sounds like you have a personal beef with Coach Davis. Right after the season, the principle who let Davis go was fired. I wonder why? My guess is the AD is next.
Well well well, what do you know Holy Cross made it to the semi-finals without Mr. Davis! I guess he wasn't as good as he thought he was. HA!
